For athletes of all sports, interval training has been getting more and more popular. Interval training is an effective way to get the benefits of cardio in less time, burn fat, and increase the heart’s efficiency. The best thing of all is that it can be done by anyone of any fitness level!
So in case you haven’t heard of it before, you’re probably wondering what exactly is high intensity interval training (HIIT)? Here’s a simple definition: it is a form of exercise in which bouts of high intensity movements are coupled with periods of low intensity exercise (rest). For example, you can sprint for a 20 second interval followed by jogging for 40 seconds, then repeating this cycle 10 times, followed by a 5 minute walking cool down. This can be done with any cardio machine or type of exercise even weight lifting.
Another great benefit of HIIT is that it stimulates fat burn! Due to the afterburn effect, interval training causes you to continue burning calories for hours after the workout has ended! Simply stated, after you exercise your body needs to burn oxygen to bring the heart back to a normal resting state. Interval training requires the body to consume more oxygen in order to do so, therefore causing you to burn more calories! How awesome would it be to burn extra calories while doing regular activities? Interval training also improves the heart in many ways: it increases VO2 max, the amount of oxygen you can take in during exercise. HIIT can also help to prevent heart disease!
Now that you have a good overview of interval training, here’s an infographic which sums it up! There’s also a few interval workouts to try!
